XWiki Enterprise and XWiki Enterprise Manager 3.0 Released

The XWiki development team is pleased to announce the release of XWiki Enterprise and XWiki Enterprise Manager 3.0. This is the first release of the 3.x cycle. Conforming to the general themes of the 3.x cycle, a lot of features have been polished and improved, and a few new features have been introduced as well. The highlights of this release are:

  • Twitter-like messaging and networking inside the wiki,
  • a new filesystem storage for attachments which allows huge attachments to be uploaded without requiring a lot of memory or database storage,
  • improved dashboard editing,
  • better cross-browser support and improved functionality for the WYSIWYG editor,
  • a revamped UI for administration, improved office presentation import with a new gallery macro,
  • live suggestions for the search input,
  • a new UI for changing user avatars

On the developers' front, we've made it easier to reuse the XWiki rendering engine outside our own codebase, by extracting two new top level projects:

  • XWiki Commons, holding generic modules not tied to the rest of the platform,
  • XWiki Rendering, holding all the XWiki-independent modules of the rendering engine.

We've setup a Jira dashboard to present the work done for the whole 3.0 release. In summary, 510 issues have been closed by 14 committers (and other contributors providing patches), out of which 236 are fixed bugs.

For more information, see the full release notes for XWiki Enterprise 3.0 and XWiki Enterprise Manager 3.0.

XWiki Enterprise/Manager 3.0 Release Statistics

XWiki Enterprise & XWiki Enterprise 3.0 are being released and I wanted to share some stats with the Community.

XWiki Developers have fixed 510 issues during the XE/XEM 3.0 timeframe (i.e. between beginning of January 2011 and end of March 2011, that's 3 months - that's 6 issues per day including week ends, not bad!).

In order to provide a good visibility of the work done, who's worked on what, and more, we've created a JIRA Dashboard for XE/XEM 3.0.

From now on we'll try to provide such a dashboard for each major XE/XEM release. Let us know if it's useful to you and if you like it. Improvement suggestions are most welcome too.

XWiki is participating in Google Summer of Code 2011

This summer, Google organizes the seventh edition of the Google Summer of Code program:

Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects. We have worked with the open source community to identify and fund exciting projects for the upcoming summer.

A participant in GSoC since the first edition in 2005, XWiki was left out of the program last year to make way for newer and smaller open source projects, but is back as a mentoring organization this year, and we're ready to give a few lucky students a chance to learn how real world, open source development works in the middle of our wonderful community.

With five years of experience as a GSoC organization, our developers are seasoned mentors, ready to guide students through the entire process. Some students are already mixing in with the developers on our IRC channel, or introducing themselves and their project proposals on the mailing lists. We're very happy to meet and discuss ideas with these interesting students, and we can't wait to see what these collaborations can lead to, since every year we've had great results, such as the WebDAV and RESTful remote access APIs, the Office importer, and the whole XEclipse project, just to name a few.

This year we're proposing a lot of interesting projects, from hard core java to clientside javascript projects, and from mobile devices to the cloud. Of course, the poster child of our GSoC experiences, XEclipse, is ready to receive further improvements, and application development on top of XWiki is also present in this year's proposals.

The student application period just started and lasts until April 8th, 19:00 UTC. Students interested in applying for a project with XWiki should:

Let's work together to make this a great Summer of Code!
