Usage

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) uses XWiki as a fully on-premises documentation and intranet platform that integrates with their internal systems, including Jira and Git repositories. The platform serves as a Data Management System (DMS), supporting collaborative documentation, internal knowledge management, and advanced customization. It is tailored to handle large volumes of data, support granular access control, and ensure alignment between documentation and operational systems. KIT also leverages XWiki’s API capabilities for ongoing integration with its IT infrastructure.

Description

XWiki replaced Confluence at KIT after rising costs and the shift to mandatory cloud hosting made the previous system unviable. The transition involved migrating over 9,400 pages, 50 spaces, and 250 users through the dedicated Confluence Migrator (Pro). The project included auditing, training, content migration, macro development, and integration setup over a 10-month period. The result is a flexible, secure, and cost-efficient on-premises solution that meets KIT's strict privacy, customization, and system integration requirements.
