For a software product there is never enough testing or feedback. That's why we decided to do usability testing sessions with people that never heard of XWiki before, in order to see what are the barriers new comers face when trying XWiki.
Between 27 May - 12 June 2014 we tested with 9 users, chosen from among friends. The testing sessions were recorded and held face-to-face in Iasi, Romania.
This is a
presentation that contains some conclusions and some video snapshots from the testing sessions:
If you want to find our more about the scenario used or the testing process you can read additional information on the dedicated Usability section on design.xwiki.org.
I want to thank all the participants for taking the time to be part of these testing sessions. We confirmed issues that we knew and found out new things. Usability is such a broad topic and user testing is at its core. We don't do this kind of testing very often, but when we do it's always eye-opening. Being part of an open source community means that our project gets a lot of testing and reporting on our mailing lists or in our issue tracker, but nothing can be compared with actual users trying to achieve a task.
Beside this presentation, we also did some issue reporting (and still have lots of material to report). If you find some usability issues make sure to report them in our issue tracker using the label 'usability'.
If you are interested in participating in remote usability testing please contact us on devs@xwiki.org or on IRC. We plan also to have usability testing sessions with Flamingo skin in the future so any help is appreciated.
